Learning Fridays - ( Machine Learning)

INFORMS Student Chapter has planned a new group learning activity: “Learning Fridays”.

This activity will gather interested graduate student to start an online course together, have discussion meetings on each Friday and help each other to learn and answer questions. We decided to start with “Machine Learning” online course which is a hot topic in data science and very helpful in most of the graduate students’ research and future career.

There are high ranked online courses in the area of Machine Learning. “Machine Learning A-ZTM: Hands-on Python & R In Data Science” on Udemy website is one of them. The course registration was $200 previously and now it has a black Friday deal of $10. By registering for this course you will have full lifetime access to the course which means you can learn at your own pace. Also, you will get a certificate of completion which could be used in your resume/CV.

For more information visit: www.udemy.com/machinelearning/

If you are interested to join the learning group, please fill out the following Google form by Wednesday 11/23/17 and purchase your own pass on the Udemy website before the end of the black Friday deal.

Junior Mad Scientist event - An outreach event for children ages 4 to 5th grade

INFORMS Student Chapter is collaborating with Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) at Jr. Mad Scientist event on Thursday Oct 24th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Ag Heritage Park Pavilion (red ban). This event is for children ages 4 through 5th grade. Organizations and individuals from Auburn University conduct a variety of science make and take projects, demonstrations, and activities for children.  Attendees will receive a passport to explore the world of science and will then visit booths. When they have filled their passports, they will become an official Jr Mad Scientist!

INFORMS Student Chapter created a very fun activity (game) for kids to learn Optimization! There are two super heroes (Batman and Superman) that want to compete to save the people in the city. Who saves the people faster will win the game. The location of the people are predefined and the same for two teams. Superheroes are line following robots. Kids will draw the lines for their superheroes to meet each and every individual in the city and save them. They should find the shortest path to draw and save the people as fast as possible.

Guest Speaker Series - Dr. Michael Gorman

Auburn University INFORMS Student Chapter, are hosting a guest speaker event at Shelby center McCartney Suites. Please join us for the lecture of our speaker Dr. Michael Gorman from University of Ohio-Dayton and Editor in Chief of Interfaces to learn about analytics in practice.

Topic: “Analytics in Action: What works for implemented work in OR?”

Abstract:

Researchers tend to focus on theoretical extensions in the literature, which has great value. However, the true impact of our discipline comes from its implementation, not citations; the validation of our discipline is its real-world application.  Dr. Gorman presents a number of applications of analytics from his consulting and research experience, then discusses what attributes of the work make them successful in practice. He discusses potential areas of research that would be most useful for the implementation of OR and Analytics. Further, he describes ways that theoretical research and applied research can dovetail in a complementary manner.

There will be an open discussion and Q&A session after the lecture.
